The Disruption Conference 2025 was held at Sea World Resort on the Gold Coast. Organised by the Domestic Violence Prevention Centre, the event brought together survivors, support workers, sponsors and advocates to raise awareness and foster community around domestic violence prevention.
The original brief focused on standard audio visual support, but as the event approached, the client’s vision evolved. Streaming services were added to accommodate remote attendees and provide post-event access and additional experiential elements were introduced for emotional support and sharing of personal experiences.
Encore delivered all AV with projector screens and PA systems. Lighting design played a key role in setting the tone – orange uplights were used on day one to reflect the brand colours of the Disruption Conference, while soft purples were introduced on day two to refresh the atmosphere. A live sketch artist created visual records and mind maps throughout the event, which were displayed on a dedicated screen.
The conference fostered a safe space for sharing personal stories. To support this, Encore helped create a sensory room with beanbags, calming music and soft lighting – a retreat for delegates who needed space to decompress. A symbolic installation featured plinths with personal items donated by victims, each spotlighted to honour its significance.
Attendees wrote messages and memories on notes which were pinned to a paper butterfly installation for personal expression, allowing for private and cathartic expression. The engagement with this activity was strong, with messages continuing to be added even as the event wrapped up.
The program began with a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony, inviting delegates to cleanse and prepare for the days ahead. Keynotes and breakout sessions followed, held across multiple rooms. An evening social event featured a jazz band, creating a warm environment.
Client feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Lucy Gregory (CEO, Domestic Violence Prevention Centre) expressed deep gratitude for Encore’s support,
“The Disruption Conference was a powerful and healing experience. It brought together survivors, advocates and supporters in a space designed for connection and reflection.
The sensory room offered a quiet, calming retreat for those needing time out, while the butterfly activation gave attendees a meaningful way to express their stories and emotions.
The atmosphere was respectful, inclusive and deeply moving, it was an event that will stay with us all.”
The event offered empathy, adaptability and meaningful engagement, helping to raise the profile of domestic violence prevention while creating a safe space for healing and connection.
