AUSA Welcome Party 2026: The Big Finish to O’Week

AUSA Welcome Party 2026: The Big Finish to O’Week
Orientation Week is a rush—tours, timetables, lectures, first-week nerves; AUSA’s Welcome Party is the release. It’s the moment the campus shifts from orientation to belonging, bringing new students together with academics, VIPs and guests for a bold end-of-week celebration on the Maths Lawns at City East Campus.
The event carried added significance as one of the first large-scale O’Week celebrations for Adelaide University, newly formed through the merger of the University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia.
The challenge: deliver scale, safely, on a live campus
AUSA needed a party experience with a clear centre—something that would pull people in, create sightlines, and hold energy as crowds arrived in waves from VIP hour (5–6pm) into the main student event (6–10pm). It had to be built fast, secured without ground stakes, and planned with weather risk in mind—because outdoor events don’t give second chances.
The solution: a bold main stage designed for O’Week energy
Encore created a clear focal point that turned the open lawns into a lively, welcoming party space for new students. A striking 15m x 15m truss structure, rising 4m high, formed a modern cube-shaped frame that instantly gave the event scale, identity and a sense of occasion. More than structure, it defined the main stage and anchored the entire celebration.
Beneath it, a 13.5m x 13.5m black-and-white checkered dance floor set the tone—graphic, playful and unmistakably O’Week—inviting students straight into the action. A textured, coloured overhead aerial installation added depth and personality, softening the structure while keeping the focus on fun.
Lighting tied everything together, washing the cube and surrounding trees to extend the party atmosphere beyond the dance floor and across the lawns to keep the space buzzing as the night unfolded. The guest experience: branding, sound, and energy that stayed seamless
Encore ensured arrival made a BIG impact, coordinating a large “WELCOME”” sign to create a clear first impression.

At the centre, the DJ booth became the heartbeat of the event. Encore delivered a raised platform and a custom acrylic DJ surround, frontage wrapped in event branding. The audio solution delivered impact and clarity for the speeches to peak party moments. Live saxophone player layered over the DJ set wirelessly, patched into the system for seamless drop-ins that lifted the outdoor space without breaking flow. Samba dancers added a final hit of movement and spectacle.
Delivery confidence: contingency-ready, campus-safe
Mixed weather conditions were forecast in the lead-up, so Encore designed an alternative, covered layout (approx. 21m x 6m) to protect key areas if conditions changed. Luckily the weather held through show, then heavy rain arrived during pack-down. The team acted quickly, removing sensitive gear first, adjusting the bump-out schedule, and communicating clearly with AUSA to ensure there was no impact to campus operations.
Results: a high-impact night AUSA could own
AUSA delivered a Welcome Party that did exactly what O’Week should—bringing people together to meet new friends, enjoy the music, and have fun. With high energy throughout the night, it provided the perfect finale to a busy orientation week.
Encore’s production helped create a space that felt exciting, safe and easy to navigate, with strong sound, lighting and a clear centre that kept the atmosphere fun from arrival through to the final track. The result was a confident, highenergy finale that AUSA could proudly own—setting the tone for the year ahead and leaving students with new friendships, shared memories and a genuine sense of belonging.
Cara Hudd, Event Manager, AUSA: “Encore were a reliable, solid supplier from start to finish. Their design input elevated the event, and their team managed the build and bump-out with total professionalism. It meant we could stay focused on our guests and the student experience, knowing the production was in safe hands.”
Daniel Armstrong, Key Account Manager, Encore: “A 15m x 15m truss cube at 4m high is an imposing build—but that’s what made it so powerful. It gave the event a clear centre, maximised the space, and created a striking frame for the dance floor, decor and entertainment.”
